There are about 6,000 patients searching the National Donor Program Registry (NMDP) for a donor each day. Only 3 out of 10 patients will receive the transplant that can help save their life. The chance to find a suitable donor might be more limited for certain minorities.
It’s often difficult to locate a match because tissue characteristics are so specific. Since tissue types are inherited, patients in need of a marrow transplant are most likely to match with someone from the same ethnic group.
